Operaciones fuera de balance y economías de escala en el sector bancario español

Abstract

La tendencia creciente hacia la diversificación del output en el sector bancario con un papel destacado de las operaciones fuera de balance suele asociarse, al menos desde el punto de vista teórico, a la obtención de ciertas ventajas de escala. Sin embargo, la evidencia empírica internacional existente no resulta concluyente respecto a los efectos de las operaciones fuera de balance sobre las economías de escala. En este estudio se estiman las economías de escala en costes y beneficios .considerando operaciones fuera de balance- para el sector bancario español. En las estimaciones se emplean distintas definiciones del output, distintas formas funcionales flexibles y distintas aproximaciones del cambio tecnológico. Los resultados indican que, si bien se encuentran economías de escala, éstas son sensibles al tipo de operaciones consideradas, al tamaño de la entidad y al cambio tecnológico.
