The private non-financial sector increased its foreign asset position in 2020

Abstract

In 2020, the current account deficit of the balance of payments reached its highest level since 1982. It was financed by larger purchases of government securities by non-residents than in 2019, amounting to EUR 86 billion, which covered both the current account deficit and the increase in net private sector assets. En 2020, le déficit des transactions courantes de la balance des paiements a atteint son plus fort niveau depuis 1982. Son financement est assuré par des achats plus importants qu’en 2019 de titres publics par les non-résidents, à hauteur de 86 Mds €, ce qui couvre à la fois le déficit des transactions courantes et la progression des avoirs nets du secteur privé.
