Abstract

This paper provides a systematic overview of the Italian innovation ecosystem, with a particular focus on the interplay between public research and the innovative capacity of the productive system. The analysis is structured around three main pillars: academic research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); patent applications filed by private enterprises, universities and public research institutions; and technology transfer initiatives. Each area is examined through a concise review of the current state of the art, drawing on data and reports from national and international institutions. The aim is to present a comprehensive picture of the strengths and weaknesses of each area and to provide policy recommendations to enhance the country's innovation performance.
