Abstract

The approach for yield development of sugar cane in Egypt includes, besides soil levelling with "Laser Instrument", planting the variety "C-9-, deep tillage under soil, soil smoothing and grinding, application of Micro elements and Limestone. Sugar Crop Council is responsible for introducing, financing and technical support for such 'package. A sample of 100 farms was used in this study, come-half of it adopted the package in the agricultural year 1992/1993, the other bone-half was a control sub-sample. Questionnaire forms, were applied, that serve the objective of this study. Objective is the appraisal of the socio-economic impacts of the target package. The farms applied the package were of higher farm size (5.9 feddans), versus the control sample, (2 feddans). The family member density per feddan of the package users was only one person versus 3-5 persons per feddan on non-user farms. Application of the package achieved an average net farm income per feddan (without deduction of the family labor) or L.E. 1040 versus L.E. 984 from non-uses farms. The package raised the yield to 43 tons, while it was only 33 tons on control farms. However, the cost per feddan on the Farms that applied the package increased to L.E. 2102, while it was L.E. 2002 on the conventional sugar cane farms. The farmers who were not applying the package showed the highest proportion of agricultural machinery holdings, 62%-85% of all machines holdings in the total sample. Accordingly, they could create a supporting income that might compensate the relatively low income and smaller farm size with larger family size than those who applied the package.
