Household Demand Analysis for Assessing Nutritional Impact of Development Programs

Abstract

A procedure was developed for estimating a full matrix of demand elasticities for a developing economy using household survey data. The results, as applied to Sri Lanka, show that the estimates appear to be reasonable in magnitude and internally consistent. The demand elasticities can serves as a useful tool in policy decisions. They are used to investigate expected changes in per capita quantities of nutrients consumed as a result of alternative development programs.
