Infrastructure Investment and Economic Development: Rural Strategies for the 1990's

Abstract

This report examines the effects of investment in transportation, telecommunications, and water a d wastewater infrastructure on improving the economies of rural America. The authors leave the reader with a healthy degree of skepticism about the possibility of the direct stimulation of economic development across the spectrum of rural communities through just any infrastructure investments. On the other hand, they agree that certain carefully selected infrastructure investments may often have good economic development payoffs, when these investments are made in places with the other prerequisites for development.
