Forecasting Wic Program Food Costs

Abstract

Prices of commodities used in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) have moved in a manner divergent from CPI indices. A price index specifically related to commodities used in the WIC program is developed in order to more accurately forecast WIC program food costs. The WIC composite index is clearly superior to other more general price indices for forecasting short-term program food cost behavior.
