Incomes on Commercial Dairy Farms

Abstract

The dairy farm income statistic most generally quoted and most commonly used in the United States is gross cash receipts from the sale of milk or cream. This statistic does not give us the total income of farms selling milk or cream which may include income from other farm sales or off-farm sources. Nor does it account for household use of home-products. Moreover, except in Census years, there is no statistic on number of farms selling milk or cream. Thus, we usually lack a reliable estimate of average income from milk and cream sales. Even if such an average were obtained, it would not reveal the wide diversity of income among dairy farms. The following analysis of dairy farm income has been derived from data published in the 1964 Census of Agriculture. It is intended to provide a look at the range and sources of income on commercial dairy farms. This information shows the rapid changes in size and capital structure of dairy farms. It also gives some insight into the possible effects of current and proposed policies on dairy farm income.
