Abstract

Sales of food (for off-premise consumption) by all types of retailers totaled approximately $52.5 billion in 1963 and meals (including snacks) accounted for another $13.8 billion. Food accounted for 21.5 percent of total sales by the retail trade and meals another 5.2 percent. These figures do not include $4.8 billion in sales of alcoholic drinks nor $6.1 billion for packaged liquor. Food and meal sales by retailers totaled $66.3 billion in 1963 compared with total personal consumption expenditures for food of $77.1 billion in the same year, as reported by the Department of Commerce. Sales by retailers include some sales omitted by the Commerce data, such as food comprising a business expense that is counted elsewhere in the national income accounts. But, personal consumption expenditures for food include many purchases not made from retailers.
