Abstract

Excerpt from the Preface: This bibliography relates to the mountaineers of the Southern Appalachian region. Their home is a land of mountains, valleys, and plateaus, the eastern portion consisting of, the Blue Ridge section of the Older Appalachians, and the western being the Appalachian Plateaus, sometimes called the Allegheny or the Cumberland mountains. In between lies the Great Valley, its several parts being the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, the Valley of East Tennessee, and in Georgia and Alabama the Coosa Valley. This region is a vast area, of approximately 111,000 square miles. It includes the four western counties of Maryland, the Blue Ridge, the Valley, and the Allegheny counties of Virginia, practically all of West Virginia, eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, the four northwestern counties of South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northeastern Alabama.
