Distribution of Workers in Selected Professional Occupations by Urban and Rural Residence, United States, 1960

Abstract

Excerpts from the report: In 1960, there were about 128 physicians and surgeons for every 100,000 persons in the United States. The ratio was 178 in central cities of metropolitan areas, and only 52 in the rural areas. The ratio of dentists to population was 60 in urban areas, and only 22 in rural areas. With the exceptions of occupations of clergyman and public school teacher, and of those typically rural, such as veterinarian and farm and heme management advisor, professional workers were concentrated in the urban areas of the United States. For example, although rural residents comprised about 30 percent of the population of the United States in 1960, only 12 percent of all physicians and surgeons, 18 percent of professional nurses, and 14 percent of pharmacists were living in rural areas.
