Abstract

Pesticide use varies considerably by crop, according to the Economic Research Service's 1982 Crop and Livestock Pesticide Usage Survey. Eleven percent of farmers who responded used professional scouting for pest problems, 59 percent self scouted their fields, and 12 percent were aware of beneficial insects and diseases. The extent of no- or reduced-till systems varied by crop. Almost 70 percent of the farmers with livestock used insecticides for livestock insect control. A majority of the respondents used common pesticide application safety equipment and 15 percent used specialized safety equipment.
