Principles of Tobacco Irrigation

Abstract

Excerpts from the report: The practice of irrigating tobacco is becoming more and more accepted by tobacco growers. For example, it was estimated that 28,000 acres of tobacco land had been provided with facilities for irrigation in 1954. By 1957 the acreage had increased to about 100,000. This bulletin discusses only the general principles of irrigating tobacco. Problems peculiar to tobacco types or to individual geographic areas are not discussed. It is possible that the general advice given may run counter to locally accepted practices. In that event, farmers should follow local recommendations. For the proper design and operation of an irrigation system, a reliable engineer or a representative of an established agricultural agency should be consulted.
