Soil Erosion and Its Control under Furrow Irrigation in the Arid West

Abstract

Excerpt from the report: Where irrigation water is applied on level or nearly level land or where properly managed flood irrigation of close-growing crops is practiced, erosion usually is slight. Likewise, with properly designed sprinkler systems, erosion does not occur, since water is applied no faster than the soil will absorb it and no runoff occurs. However, when water is applied on sloping lands by the furrow method, erosion is a constant threat.
