Abstract

The value of farm assets totaled $385.5 billion January 1,1973, after increasing $42.4 billion during 1972. The 12.5 percent rise since the beginning of 1972 was much sharper than the 7.8 percent increase during 1971 and four times the modest 3.0 percent growth in 1970. Farm debt including CCC loans reached $73.6 billion at the beginning of 1973, a growth of $6.7 billion. The 10.0 percent increase in 1972 was only slightly higher than in 1971 but twice the growth rate of 1970. Equity owned by farm proprietors amounted to $309.9 billion January 1, 1973, posting a $35.7 billion increase over a year earlier. The 13.0 percent hike almost doubled the 1971 rise and was nearly four times the percentage increase during 1970.
