Dairy: Background for 1985 Legislation

Abstract

The U.S. dairy industry, influenced by Government programs, is primarily a domestic industry growing at about the same rate as the U.S. population. Government program costs have exceeded $1 billion a year since the 1979-80 marketing year and reached a record level of $2.6 billion in the 1982-83 marketing year. If no action is taken by the Congress, present dairy legislation will expire on September 30, 1985, and the minimum price support will rise well above current levels. Continuing issues are the appropriate price support level and the proper formula or mechanism for attaining it.
