Operating Grain Aeration Systems in the Hard Winter Wheat Area

Abstract

Excerpts from the report: Many aeration systems have been installed in commercial grain storages since 1955. Operators have had little information to guide them in using the systems to best advantage. The objective of this report is to describe effective methods of using aeration systems to maintain the market quality of grain. The following sections present specific recommendations for aeration of wheat with less than 13 percent of moisture in upright and flat storages in the Hard Winter Wheat area (the Central Plains area of Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, eastern Colorado, western Missouri, and the Texas Panhandle). Suggestions for aerating wheat with more than 13 percent of moisture are given in the section on Aerating for Special Purposes. Suggestions also are given for adapting the recommendations for aerating wheat to other grains.
