Abstract

Excerpts from the report: This study was begun in June 1956 at the request of the New York Branch of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association for assistance in planning a new wholesale fresh fruit and vegetable market. It is part of a broad program of research to improve the facilities used in moving farm and food products from farm to consumer in order to reduce marketing costs. Objectives of the study were: 1. To analyze and evaluate the wholesale marketing situation for fresh fruits and vegetables for New York City. 2. To estimate the major direct costs in handling these products under present conditions. 3. To determine the kinds and amounts of facilities needed for efficient distribution. 4. To estimate total costs of construction, operating expenses, and sources of income for new marketing facilities in several possible locations in the New York City metropolitan area. 5. To outline the potential benefits to be secured from construction of a new and modern market. This report recommends new and efficient facilities at a new location for fresh fruit and vegetable wholesalers now operating from outmoded and inefficient facilities in the Lower Manhattan Market, the primary wholesale food marketing area in New York City.
