Abstract

--------------------------------------------------- This study aims to analyze the asymmetry in price transmission between levels producer and retail of fresh produce in the State of São Paulo. The examination period was June 1994 to April 2002, after the Real Plan. The theoretical model is based on the transmission prices, developed by Gardner and Heien. It is assumed that prices are adjusted with some quickly after determining the price to the producer, is an indication of market efficiency, since that information is transmitted quickly. It has been found that the elasticities of all Products were statistically smaller than one, given the perishable product and fears losses of traders, they do not convey any price change. In the analysis of asymmetry was found for some products (oranges, tomatoes), retailers convey more additions than the price decreases, while the banana and potato products, the decrements rates were transmitted over that allowances, which is consistent with the hypothesis that perishability higher correlates with greater transmission decreases.
