Abstract

The debate between the offer and the demand of foods in the world remounts the XVIII century and it was become lukewarm with the Green Revolution. However, in reason of the growth population to be larger than the agricultural production during the last decades, the world stocks of foods reduce below the normal. The technological paradigm imposed by the Green Revolution, probably, won't be adequate to assist the demand for foods in the next decade. It is necessary new technologies to supply this demand. In this way, the modern biotechnology becomes an important tool by allowing the development of new organisms starting from the gene manipulation among species that naturally doesn't happen. Because the diversity and complexity of the Brazilian agriculture, those progresses should be based on the sustainability, because, in the current days there is a great pressure of the agriculture over the environment. This scenery indicates the need to break down with the current technological paradigm incorporating more and more new values. This paper aims to examine the importance of the biotechnology for the sustainable agriculture in Brazil, so that the country can consolidate their importance on the international scenery.
