Esse artigo procura traçar paralelos entre o debate da multifuncionalidade da agricultura e a evolução das concepções em torno da propriedade fundiária: de um direito irrestrito à sua função sócio-ambiental. Através da análise histórica de legislações há um esforço no sentido de captar novos sentidos atribuídos as multifunções da agricultura e da propriedade fundiária. Na atualidade, a incorporação de demandas ambientais reorientaram essa discussão, que já demonstra essa perspectiva mais claramente a partir do marco da Constituição Federal de 1988.
