Abstract

The expansion of the production levels searched actually aiming at the increasing of employment and income generated by the economy and the maintaining of the consumption standards demanded by society cause an increasing pressure on natural resources. The analysis of the process and products generated by the industries would become feasible the adoption of measures capable of obtaining more efficient results. To make possible such analyses several theoretical concepts and methods have been developed that aim the betterment of the productive process. The concept of externalities and the method of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) make part of this device. From its application the adoption of measures that search the sustainable utilization of natural resources and the reduction of the generation of wastes by productive activities are made possible. In Brazil many enterprises have been searching the reduction of the wastes generated and, still, use recycling as an instrument of “ecological efficiency” and as a complementary source of income. Numbers indicate that recycling, besides reducing the volume of wastes in nature, has been responsible for generation of income and employment, what makes possible the inclusion of many citizens into the work market.
