Abstract

--------------------------------------------------------The favorable conditions in climate and soil, allow for guava cultivation, in addition to an ideal market propitiated by the local agro-industry, conditions necessary for the expansion of the activity. The increase in cultivated area with guava has been a concern of local agents linked to the sector, rural farmers and agro-industry representatives, due to the high cost of transport to import guava from other regions, product that the local agro-industries need for its processing, thus, demonstrating s the importance of this fruit to the regional economy. Also, guava cultivation has been favored in the region due to the utilization of some production factors turned idle in agricultural properties following the decline of cocoa production, and that implies in the reduction of investment costs for the crop. In view of this, it becomes necessary in-depth studies on guava cultivation in cocoa farms, aiming to determine the financial return from the activity, which can subsidize producers on the decision to invest in the crop in the referred region. The research information collected was of a primary origin, obtained from a questionnaire applied to producers of Paluma guava variety. In the study, analyses of indicators for investment were used, such as, a Net Present Value, Cost/Benefit Relation, Internal Tax on Return and Period of Capital Recovery. Based on the obtained results one may conclude that the cultivation of guava, under the conditions of this study, is a viable crop and with relatively low risk level in relation to variations that can occur in the price of the product.
