Abstract

---------------------------------------------------The changes that agriculture has undergone along the years have not been favourable for a significant part of rural workers. On the contrary, the intense technological modernization has spawned an economic and social exclusion, which in turn has contributed to increase rural exodus, and as such to rural unemployment. In an attempt to change this picture, rural workers resist organising themselves in resistance. A well-known example is the Movement of Landless Rural Workers - MST that is seen as successful in what it set out to fight. That Movement has pressured authorities in as much to promote efficient agricultural policies that enable small farmers to stay in the countryside. In order to achieve that better land distribution is essential, one that would allow the development of short circle alimentary cultures and activities that create a sustainable income for rural families. As is commonly accepted, a high concentration of land results in an increased labour force. Therefore rural workers are forced to alienate their labour force, as they are not able to rent someone else’s land. This essay intends to initiate a discussion about the importance of the Agrarian Reform that goes beyond land distribution and considers the eradication of rural poverty.
