Abstract

----------------------------------------------One of the differentiations attributes used by the agribusiness to obtain competitiveness it is the irrigation system use, which will be profitable and sustainable, if it be used appropriately, maximizing the efficiency of land and water use. However, the use of the water resources in the economical activities is uncertain, due to climatic, environmental and social changes, among others. In that way, the main objectives of this study are: to verify the use of the water resources, to identify how the irrigation systems contribute to the competitiveness of the agribusiness and to identify some of the uncertainties of the irrigation systems in the field of the agribusiness. This theoretical essay can be classified as qualitative and exploratory, based in bibliographical references pertinent with the thematic in debate in several national and international journals, available in data bases. In conclusion, the irrigation systems have an important contribution in the competitiveness of the agribusiness, allowing an increase in the food supply with smaller expansion of the agricultural border, besides making possible the environmental preservation of non used areas. However, the uncertainty factors related to the natural, cultural, economical, social, political, institutional and technical resources claim that the agribusiness adopts competitive strategies of productivity, quality and reduction of costs in a sustainable way.
