Abstract

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Summary: This report analyzes the mid-term changes in milk production in Sweden. A written web-based survey was conducted between December 2009 and March 2010. 273 Swedish dairy farmers answered an online questionnaire about developments in their region and on their farm. The respondents expect a further decrease in milk production in Sweden, especially in Northern Sweden. On the other hand, the participating dairy farmers state that they plan to increase their milk production and see themselves in a good competitive position. This can be explained by the chosen survey sample that consists mainly of larger and future-oriented farms. In addition to the concentration of milk production in South and East Sweden, the respondents expect an increase in organic milk production. According to the participants organic production will gain special importance in the east of Sweden – in the area near Stockholm.
