Abstract

----- In Martinique, 46 % of the farmers are cattle breeders and 50% grow vegetable. These 2 productions are often found on the same farms. The CEMAGREF of Martinique has been implementing a cattle husbandry system research. Such a study cannot be carried out place without taking into account farming system as a whole. The exploraty phase of the research has pointed out some c~mnections between cattle breeding and cropping in relation with the grazing systems : labour use, land use and by product use. Free grazing requiests little labour. Tethering is often in competition with cropping for land use. Zero grazing often aims to manure production. 3 main groups of cattle husbandry system have been identified. - The traditional cattle breeders (the main group) give a little attention to their few cattle whose production is limited. - The modernized cattle breeders are close to the formers : small herds (
