Abstract

In the late 70' s, small farmers started growing pineapple, because of the numerous advantages of this crop, particularly a low susceptibility to climatic risks (hurricanes) and guaranteed saleability (canneries) and prices. To respond to this interest and to the need of more technicality, the CIRAD-FLHOR started an operation to provide training and technical assistance. After a preliminary identification of their needs, this operation included thematic meetings, followed by regular farms visits. In all cases, a close relationship has been maintained with every farmer. According to the results of an investigation carried out in 1990, these farmers have reached a high technical and intensification level (optimization of land use and inputs, generalization of ratoon cropping). They are now associated within the ASP A. On a total area of 90 hectares they produce about 15% (i.e. 2000 mt) of the fruits supplied to the largest pineapple cannery of the island. In 1991, a convention between CIRAD-FLHOR, SUAD (official agricultural development service) and ASPA provided the frame to continue this cooperation with the small farmers, with a particular emphasis on socio-economical aspects (reference plots follow-up).
