Abstract

A sugar cane field heavily infested with Diaprepes abbreviatus larvae was selected to determine the damage of this pest. The field was divided in 3 blocks with 10 plots of 100 ft^. The canes from each plot were harvested, the per cent of sucrose was determined and finally the production of cane and sugar were estimated. The tonnage of cane and sugar and per cent of sucrose were submitted to a correlation analysis with the per cent of bored rootstalk by the insect larvae. This study showed that there exist a highly negative correlation between the tonnage of cane and sugar and the per cent of bored rootstalk. No correlation can be establishe between per cent of sucrose and bored rootstalk, apparently the quality of the cane juices were not affected by the insect damage. The main effect of the insect: damage was marked by the reduction on the tonnage of cane that can be attributed to the reduction to the movement of water and minerals from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant. The regresion lino was estimated then, following this line and considering the possible cost of insect control,a preliminary economic injury level was established. These results showed that when the sugar cane field has 3 or more per cent of bored rootstalk the economic injury level is reached. Future works will be directed to establish the adult population level needed to reach this preliminary economic injury level established for the larvae damage.
