Water Portfolio and Land Lease Contracts: Evidence from Upper East Bank of Chao Phraya Delta, Thailand

Abstract

Recent studies show that having access to multiple water sources (i.e., having a water portfolio) has positive impacts on land values in semi-arid regions. We examine the relationship between water portfolio and land lease contracts at the plot level in the rice farming area of Central Thailand. Our empirical results reveal that although the conjunctive use of surface and groundwater can help avoid crop failure during drought periods, multiple water sources have no influence on the land lease contracts. We discuss the potential implications for drought management in such environments.
