Abstract

So a case study of the maize farming in northern Benin was realized. he study was preceded by an exploratory study to determine by a participative and dynamic step with the farmers of the indicators which translate the economic sustainability of farmer. thus during the deepened study, the data relating to the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, with the inputs and outputs of productions were collected from 336 maize farmers. The indicators such as the level of output, the capital available, the level of yield, the net income and the technical efficiency of maize farming were suggested and retained. With each indicator of the scores and values thresholds of sustainability were allotted. It arises that the scores of economic sustainability of the various indicators remain below the thresholds of allowed sustainability. Consequently the maize farming is not economically sustainable in this current state. The research institutes and leaders must do their best in order to bring to the farmers agricultural technologies and the easy and effective strategies of adaptation in the long term.
