La conjoncture chez Arthur Spiethoff. Le modèle théorique et sa portée empirique

Abstract

L’étude de la conjoncture économique n’est pas une nouveauté dans l’Allemagne de Weimar En 1923, Arthur Spiethoff va pourtant renouveler l’analyse par la publication d’un article important, point de départ d’une nouvelle étape dans le domaine de l’analyse cyclique de l’économie. Intitulé Krisen, sa contribution repose sur une observation minutieuse, pour l’Allemagne, la France, les Etats-Unis et le Royaume-Uni, des événements économiques de 1840 à 1914. Il élabore, dans la tradition de Clément Juglar et des théoriciens des cycles longs (Van Gelderen, Kondratieff, etc.), des séries statistiques, afin d’isoler les chaînes des phénomènes qui présentent la plus grande régularité et caractérisent les diverses phases de l’évolution conjoncturelle. Cette recherche lui vaudra les éloges de chercheurs aussi renommés que Joseph Schumpeter.
