Abstract

In 2021, Napalm Records as one of the biggest record labels in the independent scene commissioned the Department Financial Accounting & Management Accounting at CAMPUS 02 University of Applied Sciences to quantify the regional economic effects triggered by the entrepreneurial activities in the business areas of publishing, trade and events. Typically, similar projects use face-to-face surveys on-site at events to collect data. Due to the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the methodology changed to desk research. Internal data from Napalm Records supplemented the database for calculations in the macroeconomic simulation model. This model is based on regionalized input- output tables and can determine sectoral output given sectoral input linkages and variable final demand. The model includes the revenues of Napalm Records as well as revenues at the same level (e.g., accommodation and catering at events). These are shown in the direct effects. The intermediate inputs required to generate the revenues are included in the indirect effects. Furthermore, induced effects result from the income spent for consumption and investment purposes generated in the directly and indirectly affected sectors. The results of the project show that the direct effects in those sectors in which the additional final demand arises directly, the indirect effects in intermediate sectors and the induced effects double the value added in the province of Styria to 8.5 million euros and secure additional jobs to the extent of about 50 %.
