Abstract

Managerial capitalism (or the current form of free-market orthodoxy), it is argued, has limitations and flaws, but is there any better alternative? The mounting chorus of criticisms against managerial capitalism has led to two groups. The first comprises seekers who acknowledge the failings of the system but see its improvement and reformulation as the favored and realistic path to reform. This group invokes a “gentler” form of capitalism that retains the benefits from economic growth and prosperity but can also be improved with moral underpinnings. This group includes economists and like-minded reformists from business schools. A new interest in communities as a viable partner or a “third force” in human development comprises the second group. For individuals in this group, managerial capitalism is so flawed that only a radical societal restructuring can resolve the problem. They consider incremental changes in managerial philosophy to be ineffective. Though their arguments are nuanced, all share a deep concern that something is fundamentally wrong with the current market system and that some revival of communities is needed to resolve this problem…
