Abstract

Poverty is the scourge of humankind. This oft-cited aphorism accentuates the intransigence of poverty since ancient times. Poverty is linked to income inequality, ecological degradation, impaired health and welfare, limited educational opportunities, and community deterioration. While historical records show the gradual reduction of extreme poverty in recent times, impoverishment is relentless, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and in developing countries…
