Abstract

In the aftermath of the 2007–09 Great Recession, considered among the world’s worst economic periods and the longest recession since World War II, economists Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff published a book tellingly titled This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly. With attention still fixated on the financial crisis, the book was timely, relevant, and masterful. This extensive analysis covering 66 countries over more than 800 years illuminates the fundamental causes of financial crises.
