Abstract

This chapter presents what knowledge is, the types of knowledge, what knowledge management (KM) is about, and how knowledge is created and shared. Knowledge is the most critical asset an organization possesses. It is inherent in people and forms the organizational intellectual capital. However, sharing, acquiring, and storing knowledge is problematic if it is in a tacit format. Therefore, it should be converted into explicit knowledge. KM seeks to “get the best out of it”. Components, standards, and processes must be understood and incorporated into the organization to do effective KM, ensuring that knowledge can be extracted from people’s minds and internalized into the company as organizational knowledge. This enables the development of goods, services, business processes, and systems.
