Abstract

Energy security and sustainable development are pivotal concerns for European industrial enterprises in the contemporary geopolitical landscape. This research examines the impact of the reduced supply of Russian natural gas on the European Union (EU) industry and analyzes the challenges and prospects of alternating energy policies for manufacturers. The research scrutinizes the state of EU manufacturing industries and elucidates the influence of the energy crisis. The authors applied various methods, including description, synthesis, and comparative analysis. The research object encompasses production activities within EU countries. The research is based on information from sectoral and scientific literature, corporate reports, and data from international institutions and official governmental releases. Energy-intensive sectors within the EU have confronted challenges, including elevated energy prices and a forced transition toward decarbonization. However, a comprehensive pan-European energy and industrial strategy remains elusive. The absence of a coherent strategy has elicited concerns among EU countries regarding a substantial decline in domestic industrial activity, exacerbated by persistently high energy costs. Economic forecasts, particularly for Germany, are not optimistic as deindustrialization looms increasingly menacing. Surging energy prices, catalyzed by green energy policies and compounded by geopolitical tensions such as the Ukrainian crisis, have spurred the relocation of industrial activities. This outcome has placed a significant strain upon European business, prompting some enterprises and investors to consider the USA and China as relocation options. The topic provides an opportunity to study the changing European industrial framework.
