Abstract

On October 3, 2008, Tata Motors announced the closing of its car manufacturing plant at Singur, in the state of West Bengal, India. The decision came in the face of widespread protests from local farmers, who claimed that their land had been acquired by the state government under questionable circumstances. Similar problems over land-acquisition issues affected many other industrial projects in India, posing a significant threat to the government's initiatives to spur employment in the manufacturing and services sectors…
