Abstract

This chapter presents knowledge transfer channels between universities and industries that are based on open innovation. The focus is on open, informal social learning approaches, such as communities of practice (CoPs). This chapter provides an empirical case study on how university–industry collaboration is intensified by leveraging a CoP as a channel for innovation and knowledge sharing. In this case study, the concept of CoP is applied to the development of the Northern Research and Innovation Platform (NRIP). The NRIP is an open forum for university–industry collaboration promoting knowledge and expertise in the field of environment, energy, and natural resources, with a strong geographical emphasis on the Arctic aspect. This study provides new empirical evidence on the power of working in communities for more efficient and innovative approaches. Academia and industry are recommended to select an open innovation strategy to achieve next-level collaboration.
