Abstract

Brian Xin was comfortably settled in an armchair at StarryCoffee, drinking his latte as usual. He liked to sit there, taking a break and putting things into perspective. His wife had opened StarryCoffee a year ago, on the first floor of the building where his technological company, StarryMedia, was headquartered. Besides providing the employees of Zhangjiang High-Tech Park in the Pudong area of Shanghai with delicious meals and coffees, the café served as the perfect lab for Brian to try out the new features of his product. Brian Xin co-founded StarryMedia in 2009 with Tim Gong, a colleague of his whom he knew from a previous job at Linktone. The two engineers had seen the potential of the Internet in collecting the data that netizens share and the value that such data could provide to businesses. Therefore, they had decided to develop the tools necessary to bring this huge opportunity to local merchants. In their late thirties, they left their jobs to focus on this startup venture…
