Abstract

The decline in world fisheries is a global issue that has caused deep concerns for international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Resources Institute (WRI). The rapid increase in fish landings has caused the decline and depletion of major fish stocks, making overfishing an international problem. Before the 1950s, the problem was limited to a few regions including the North Atlantic, the North Pacific, and the Mediterranean. However, since the 1950s, the expansion of global fishing activities has resulted in the exploitation of fish stocks globally. As a result, many fishing areas have reached their maximum productivity and are in decline. Although policy makers and industry groups have paid some attention to this problem, a drastic change in fisheries policy and management is urgently needed…
