Abstract

Emerging markets play an important role in the global economy, given the prospects of their high economic growth and improving legal infrastructures. Despite the importance of these economies, questions related to corporate governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in emerging markets are scarce in the literature, requiring further research. The aim of this chapter is to examine the main environmental, social and governance (ESG) variables of the companies listed in the JSE SRI Index of South Africa, paying special attention on governance aspects and how they relate to economic, environmental and social features. The results reveal that companies' vision and strategy are key corporate governance factors to integrate extra-financial aspects in the management processes and to achieve a better CSR performance. They show the need to advance in the research on how suitable corporate governance structures could contribute to achieve a higher level of corporate sustainability performance.
