Abstract

From the mid-to-late 1800s, American colleges and universities began to financially subsidize and support their students’ physical activities besides those in intramural and recreational sports. The most prominent activity was their athletic teams’ games and matches. Being competitive and also exciting for students to participate in, these contests became increasingly popular among such groups as athletes’ family and friends, alumni and faculty, school officials, and journalists in the media. While local newspapers contained articles about them, various events appealed to people in the community including sports fans of all ages and even politicians…
