Abstract

Aligning R&D projects to the strategic objectives of every advanced technology firm is one of the important issues for the decision-makers in these firms. Several criteria’s are involved when R&D proposals are evaluated and the projects are selected. However, it is usually the criteria of financial returns, technology alignment, and probability of success that has a greater weight of importance. Technological innovation has been an important driver for competitive success in many industries (Schilling, 2012). For advanced-technology firms, the shorter product life cycles, and global competitions have increased the importance of R&D and consequently the interest in R&D portfolio selection methods. Robust assessment of innovation potential of technologies is essential before investment decision (Dereli and Altun, 2013). At the present time, investments in R&D project if not done properly could lead to wastage of large amount of resources or even bring down the enterprise (Heidenberger and Stummer, 1999).
