It floats out there in popular culture as “America’s heartland”; home to a vast amount of soybean and corn production; a dreary and cold continental climate; its great fame achieved from gangsters such as Al Capone and John Dillinger; and the region is far from the east and west coasts that link the United States with Europe and Asia.
