Abstract

In 1965, Singapore was a newly established independent republic with very little land, few natural resources, an unskilled workforce, a diverse ethnic composition and unfriendly neighbors. With political independence came economic uncertainty. This was the nascent state of affairs typical of the Third World. However, after 50 years of development, Singapore achieved first-world status in economics and wealth, and ranked in the upper echelon in terms of its national competitiveness. This could certainly be called a miracle. How was it made possible?…
