Abstract

China and Asia's “climbing the ladder” is today's big story. We have seen that over the last two centuries country after country have climbed the economic development ladder. Perhaps I have not reminded the reader sufficiently that onward improvement are not guaranteed. In the early decades of the 20th century Argentina and other South American countries were on par with Western Europe, but subsequently saw serious setbacks. Emerging countries are initially seen as a threat, but, subsequently, they join the others “up there”. History often repeats itself, and, as always, politicians and lobbies in countries higher up the ladder will try to block emerging economies in their development path…
