Abstract

In a system characterized by economic relations and by technology, knowledge is, on the one hand, a fundamental and non-pervading resource but, on the other hand, it is so much taken for granted that it is not regarded as a source of competitive advantage. The goal of this paper is to show how agent based models can capture the emerging behavior of complex social systems and hence can represent, with a structured framework, the role of explicit and implicit knowledge within organizations. There are formalisms which allow to study the emergency of social behavior with the creation and study of models, known as "artificial societies", employing software agents. A detailed review of some agent based paradigms is presented, as to their structure and use inside a computational simulation model. The work is carried on at the e-business LAB at the University of Turin (resp. prof. Marco Pironti).
