Abstract

Sacrifice is likely the most personal and deeply emotional of the principles. Almost everyone has a story of sacrifice — a loved one who lost their life in war, a parent who worked two or three jobs to provide, the time we gave up our place in line for someone who needed it more. In my opinion, these selfless acts may be the most beautiful part of life and living. They are also extremely innovative and very courageous. This is because sacrifice is the ultimate act of subtraction in pursuit of something greater. It is a wager; something now possessed is given away for the promise of something more. It is not natural, it can be a contradiction, and it is not the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, the impact is profound. Those that have truly mastered sacrifice willingly embrace it. It’s not something to avoid or ignore, it is a playground of breakthrough ideas. The story of Maya Lin and her design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a fantastic example of this magical exchange…
